How I hacked into Ubuntu admin account with my limited account?!

So so.. this is something techy, something about Ubuntu, and something about having fun! You people must have heard a lot about hacking into the Windows XP/Vista administrator accounts when you're given only a limited account. Many of 'em doesn't work at all, as for a fact. Well we'll talk about something more interesting.. hacking into Ubuntu when you're given a limited account!

Where there is a will, there is a way. In our college department computer lab, we're all given those stupid limited accounts - in both Windows and Ubuntu. And that is crap. We can't install compiz fusion in Ubuntu, while in Windows we can't play those ol' games(Mortal Kombat, Roadrash..) during lab hours :( So I decided to take revenge, and went into this research about hacking into the walls. And it was a grand success! Let me tell you how..

1) First of all, let the system boot.. and wait for the GRUB menu to appear. You can see various options listed out. Now press 'e' to go to the edit menu(where you can add parameters to the boot process). In a smaller list that appears, select the appropriate option(Usually the 2nd one).

2) Now you get the boot script all open for editing. Delete off the part saying quiet splash(this is optional), and most important, add this part at the end :

init=/bin/bash

Press enter. Then press 'b' to boot the edited option.

3) After booting up, Ubuntu shows up just a fullscreen terminal showing root@none
Yeah! you've got a root terminal which doesn't need a password!
The following steps are even easier..

Mount the root partition

mount -o remount,rw /

You may need to type this after that: (this is optional, but it's better you do this)

mount -o remount,rw /proc

Then we reset the root password for the system

passwd
Enter new password
Confirm new password

When you do things right, you get a message that password has been updated successfully.
Type this in finally, just to make sure everything is fine and good.

sync

Go on.. restart the computer!

4) Let Ubuntu boot. Login to your limited account as if nothing happened.
Open the terminal and type in:

su
type in the password you created sometime before

5) Okey! now you are the root. When you're root and you know the correct commands, you can do anything in Ubuntu!
As for now, we'll simply add our limited account to the admin group
For me, the limited account given is student. To give admin privileges to this account, I just added it to the following groups.

adduser student admin
adduser student sudo
adduser student root

Adding to the admin group is enough. But just to ensure freedom.. :)

I'm done, and I installed some softwares and customized my own Ubutnu machine :D
That was simple, wasn't it. Now, whenever you get an Ubuntu machine do try this. Hack into your friends computer!

And for people who haven't tried Ubuntu yet.. go on try it once, you'll love it!
Check the Ubuntu site :)

And here's a post on the random entertainments that came up in the last few days..!!

There's a 20% chance of tomorrow..
Live today!!

47 - The Silent Assassin is back!
So.. I started playing Hitman 4 Blood Money! It's amazing. The role of the professional killer- agent 47- is more enjoyable than ever before. There's a lot of features - from various new moves for the character to well built environments to an interesting ingame story! Go to the Hitman Blood Money official website, fall in love with No. 47!

Tweets from college
And I wonder why i said 'tweets'..! Okey, I'm in Twitter.. but I have no idea what I'm gonna do with it actually. But it's better than my Facebook account, which is having a pathetic death out of ignorance, right now. Twitter account was going in the same path, till I found the Twitterfox Firefox plugin. It simply pop-ups recent tweets and enables us to tweet right from a corner of our browser(I mean, Firefox browser :P). Twitterfox is the savior! Still I'm not that sincere with it, as I am with Orkut, or this blog!

So, what's all this tweets-from-college thing? One word - I was selected the Association Secretary of the Computer Science Department of my college(that's too many words, sorry!). There's no big deal though. It's more idle than being an average student in OUR college! (I tend to be really free and open in my blog!)
"Why me?!", I exclaimed while replying the Union secretary's phone call that evening.
"Just that everyone suggested you. You're selected."
You don't know, I hate politics in MY college. Every administrative task is under the control of this political union. Now what. I was taken to a room filled with Cheguvera snaps the next day. I gave my nomination. And there's probably no one else for competition. Hence I'm practically in charge from now on. Let's see et revolutionizing the stagnant computer science department of gcek.. (NEVER!)
I just love to make paper-planes at college :)

Movies n Movies
Last week, in spite of all the crap works, I managed to watch a bunch of crap movies as well.. and some good ones together with them. Here goes the impressions..

Seven Pounds:
Another Will Smith charm. Excellent! Must watch! The film makers completed the movie, then put it in video cutter and chopped it into lots of pieces. Then they shuffled the pieces, and put them together. Now that's an interesting experiment. The way all the isolated scenes connect together in the end.. is beautiful!

Evan Almighty:
Morgan Freeman may be excellent as god. Bruce Almighty might have been real funny. But don't get deceived. This movie truly doesn't make any sense! I wasted my 2.5 hours on it.

What's common between Evan Almighty and Seven Pounds?
Although never comparable, both the movies adapt dialogues from the amazing.. spider man!
As Evan prays to god "I'm in a position of great power. And I know, that with great power comes great responsibility"
And Willy says, "Who am I? ..I'm your friendly neighbourhood, tax collector.. Ben"

Thick as thieves:
No no no no!! Another film which deceived me for the reason that it was Freeman and Antonio Banderas starring. Evan was better!

The curious case of Benjamin Button:
It was made for the award. Bradpitt is born as an old person.. and undergoes the reverse aging process, and die as a little baby. At some part, he becomes Bradpitt itself. And towards the end.. we all pray.. "God, die! die! It's too lagging!" But, he was born as an old baby. How he shrinks back into a baby again?.. Not logical, is it?!

And a little comix..
Watchmen movie is released! Ha! I'm talking like a person who knows everything about Watchmen. Thanks to Twitter and again, the Twitterfox plugin. Some tweets can be real informative. One fine day people were all tweeting about this Watchmen movie, and eventually I came to know that it's the movie version of a super duper comic series. Then someone said "People who watch Watchmen movie without reading the comic should be burned alive!". Ooh.. so I decided to read the comic.

Googled it!

I downloaded all the 12 issues and then found that it's some strange .CBZ format. A small research showed that it's a format specific for graphic novels, and I found this Ubuntu software to read them conveniently. It's called comix itself.
To install comix in Ubuntu, simply use this terminal command..

sudo apt-get install comix

Hmm and the comic is interesting. I see a potential chance that I may go more into graphic novels. By the way.. find the comic yourselves! :D
And there are lot more comic actions coming to the screen.. including Spiderman 4 and the Avengers!

And that's all for now

Next Friday is not your lucky day.
As a matter of fact, you have no lucky day this year!

Classy!

It's music again!
The Beatles has been spicing up my 2 hours journey back from college over the last 2 weeks, and thus helping me move on. I've told you the last time I shared music with you; I am adoring the classics these days!

The music of Beatles is now all around me. No wonder why they became the most mind blowing band of their times. The first time you listen to the music, it may not be that friendly. But you listen to it again, and again and then you'll find yourself tapping to the rhythm and falling in love with the tune!

On to the music..

So we sailed up to the sun,
Till we found a sea of green,
And we lived beneath the waves,
In our yellow submarine..

I don't support the black-yellow combination. But only that suits the mood for now! :)

She makes me so Purr..fect!

Finally! I'm gonna write something about my favourite kind of pet - Teh Kitty!
I do love every kind of animals, including chameleons! :D But somehow I got much close to the cat; probably because I brought up two of them!

A word..
I've been living around with so many pets even from childhood. My uncle(who went far far away some years back) had these dogs, parrot and brought home everything he got on the way. So as I grew familiar with the little pals me started my own animal kingdom. My research started on tadpoles in the homely pond. It was all fun watching them grow into tiny(really tiny) replica of frogs. Then I got this tortoise, and then this baby tortoise. The most wonderful of them was a cute Bulbul chick I found lost in my schoolyard! Still many people came into the scene - like a squirrel, a pigeon, and also many birdies whom I found wounded and attacked but they lived for only few days. And after all, there came.. the cat!

Ode to you my darlings..
The first cat in my life was named Chinnu. I got her as a small small baby, sleeping by the side of her mom. She was white, and totally white! When I brought her home I had to face a hell of oppression from my parents, especially from my dear Mommy! Well I fought so hard to keep her with me. I put Chinnu in a small box with cloth tucked inside. At the first sight it looked like some bunch of white cotton in that box :)

Chinnu later turned out to be the beauty queen of her territory! And as I remember she showed signs at her small age itself. As a kid Chinnu slept in her box all the time. Occasionally she gets up and cries for milk. After sipping a little of milk(which was so full to her little tummy!), the next 15 minutes she spent seriously for cleaning her body! It was so funny when she was a little kid. But her efforts proved to be worth! Her hair was shining and her tail was magnificent. She attracted the attention of every guest to our home. Another thing was that she always took a chair and thus seated in equal priority to the other people!

Her skills in playing with ice cream balls is worth mentioning! She could perform a number of tricks to get the claps..! Okey, now every smart and beautiful lady needs a gentleman. But Chinnu was so sincere to us to go out and date all the crap boys out there! She stayed inside home and enjoyed her life :) Anyways at some point of time I noticed that Chinnu, sitting in the main hall, went to the backside at some sharp time everyday. It was some 8 'O clock at night. One day I actually followed her secretly to see her sitting in front of the grills, staring at some handsome fella out there at the other side. They were looking into each others eyes I guess. Such a pure love!
Later I lost Chinnu. It was a sudden missing. I don't know what happened to her. If you're still on this earth.. my love to you dear..!

So you see the picture? Wait.. that's not Chinnu! That's miss Snowpie! Yeah the second cat to my home, after many civil wars and cold wars with Mommy! I chose a whole same white kitty and gave her some English name this time :) Anyways first love is the true love. Snowpie was just the opposite of Chinnu. She gave me such solid proofs for variation of personality in cats!

Snowpie never cared to clean herself up. She dived into all the mud and dirt with her snow-white looks. And to the worse she was always in my bed. Whenever she finds me sleeping.. she climbs up the bed silently and slept over my back :D ! The destruction doesn't end here. She made every kind of disturbance in our neighborhood, creating a cold war between us people.

In spite of everything, I loved her so much.. until she ran away with a boy! It was a brown big cat who visited our place and no wonder any girl falls for his looks. Anyway everything doesn't end up as expected. He dumped her I guess. After some weeks she came back, all slim and tired. We felt all angry with her and didn't allow her to get in for 2 days, after which she won all our pity. And then there was these two brown kittens. Uhh.. not even a trace of white! Now it was like.. either me or them in my home, with my Mommy! Oh ya I'm selfish; I had to agree with throwing away my sweet kittens :( Anyhow Snowpie managed to cause maximum destruction around here together with her kittens, before they left.
Later on, very sadly, Snowpie was attacked by a mob of wandering dogs.
But she never allowed me to work with my computer!

Now I got into Engineering, and I don't have time for another revolution for rights to keep cats at home! But still I have a friendly visitor here!

After all, pets leave us much before we love them enough.. and always keep that small pain and sweet memories in our heart. I dedicate this post to all my little friends and to the two of my very special snow-white girls!

Cat lovers, this way...
Hey did you like this kitty?

Then you're gonna love this website!

A day in the life #2, Nostalgia, and more!

In our busy days filled with busy stuff and suffocating environments we should find some time to go back to the past and watch our old times out there. It just keeps you alive! And this is what this post is about. Today was a happy day. It made me so full (and tired).

Part 1 : Coding and Decoding
Me, Jo, and Hari reached the College of engineering, Thalassery for the Abinitio '09 IT fest; particularly for the software debugging competition. We gave our names, and then they asked for Rs.100 per person. Wtf?! We haven't been told about this. We have no money, and even if we have, this is too much for this silly competition! What more to say.. we gave the money! :D
They gave us a paper - 15 questions, 45 minutes to answer them. I had no pen! It was all about predicting the output of some program codes. It was boring as well. (Not just because I received an sms right now telling that I have no prize :( And nobody ever comment down there like 'participation is important'!)

I explored the college afterwards. It had a smaller campus than ours, but was simple. So I loved it. It looked all open without much privacy. But today I felt all open and free. May be my all-closed college with it's ugly politics is suffocating me. As a matter of fact, mine is a government college and everybody knows that the government doesn't want anything to develop(no matter how many articles Sir A.P.J write on viewing India as an already developed country). (Warning: Never under-estimate gcek reading the above stuff. Just for formality.. I don't care if you do. Cheers!).
A bunch of my +2 schoolmates are in this college, and that was my next mission - finding them. Now I started hitting on them one by one. They were much surprised and we had no idea what all to talk about. We were just so happy to meet again, in a happier college, on a happier day. Now I got all their contact numbers and promised to keep in touch *instantaneous emotional promises*

Part 2 : Goody good afternoon
Now god left this Hari guy with me. I had to take proper care of him until I dump him into a return bus in the evening. At home I decided to take him to the Thalassery town and let him explore all the stories and historical marks of the place, which i found to be a brilliant plan afterwards.

In the bus..

Me: You know what.. this place, Thalassery has got a dazzling history. It's famous for the 3 C's
Ha: Whatsit?
Me: It's cake, cricket and circus.
Ha: I've heard something on circus. Some old roots of circus in Thalassery and all.
Me: Yeah right. This place had a lot of highly skilled people of circus who shared their ideas all around the world. There was a man called Kannan, who stunned Adolf Hitler with his tricks! You see.. there are lots of circus families all around here and some of 'em around my home. Once this death-well performer in a carnival challenged people to drive a car in the well as he does with his bike. Ah.. this is Thalassery and there was actually someone to take up the challenge!"
Ha: Great. What's about the other two C's?
Me: Cricket.. there was some colonel who came to Thalassery during British rule, and he started conducting Cricket matches here, dating back to 1800 (exact figure referred right now)!
And cake.. in India it was made for the first time in here by Mamballi Bapu. Some British man brought this piece of cake from England, and Bapu identified the ingredients by smelling it!"
Ha: Seems like this place has lot more to tell!
Me: Sure does:)

The first takes..
We stopped at the huge Thalassery fort (Yeah! there's a whole fort out here!). We roamed beside the secret tunnel inside the fort, the light house, watch tower etc etc. Its so detailed!
"So you haven't seen much of a sea in your land-surrounded area? Then watch this sir -my school- the St.Joseph's, embracing the Arabian sea and standing in all it's glory!"

The fort and the school

I had much more to tell him about my school, situated right next to the fort. Man, the whole stuff around there is built by the British. India's boarder passes touching this school (We have direct access to the sea!) and every classroom in the school has a view to the sea, and the sea winds here are exclusively from the coasts of Africa.. honest (really)!

Sunset - original view from my ol' school

A little caffeine..
The next mark of Thalassery - The Indian Coffee House. I gave Hari this special Thalassery treat.
And I joked, "Thalassery is not a place. It's a feeling."
He smiled. He took it seriously?

And we walked..
"This is Overberry's Folly. Folly - an unaccomplished piece of work. The man planned this work to see the most beautiful sunset. He must have been out of funds! :D"

The Overberry's Folly

The sun was ready to move down. But I had one more place on the list. It was the park which is surely a miss for him if Hari doesn't visit. Even though not the most beautiful sunset, the thing is equally enjoyable from the park. After all, it's all along the same coast line.
"So we are walking along the boarder of India!". Hari now seems all excited.
The road to the park is long but very peaceful, quiet, and gave a nice view to the sea together with the refreshing wind. I remembered walking along this path some 3 years before, with her.
"Isn't it the most romantic thing to walk along this way with your girlfriend?". That was me. *nostalgia ready to strike with it's baseball bat*
"Yeah, you'll never forget!" *struck!*

20 minutes before..
Hari: "So how.. the thing.. how does it happen?"
Me : "Man, this is teenage and this is Kerala! You go love a girl, and she loves you back like this is her first and final love. Then the news gets to her parents. She gets a free counseling. Next day she comes to you and say 'This won't work out'. Don't cry.. this is a generalized theory, accurate in 99.9% of the cases. Of course there is 0.1%, I know. But it's YOUR life."

Can I marry her, mommy? :)
The end of it - we saw the sunset. Hari took a great snap of et. I walked back all the way alone (the baseball bat hurt).
And it really made my day.
